Keep Shopping or Start Dropping: Sweater Vests

You may have noticed sweater vests everywhere this fall, as they’ve risen in popularity. If you’re looking to be on-trend, they can be bought at any trendy clothing store, but there remains a more ethical option: thrifting! Sweater vests were around long before their current rise to fame, so it’s easy to come across one at any thrift store.

These knit vests are typically styled over a white, long sleeve button-up or simply over a short sleeve white t-shirt and match the current sweater vest fad. While fashionable celebrities like Harry Styles, Emma Chamberlain, Tyler, The Creator, and Bella Hadid wear sweater vests, no one can change my mind when I say— sweater vests are ugly!

Sweater vests remind me of private school uniforms. While there’s nothing wrong with this, a preppy style is something I avoid because I have always been drawn to more expressive and individualized clothing styles. That being said, no matter how funky and cool a sweater vest may appear, I’ve never found one I truly like.

In men’s fashion, sweater vests have been around since the 1910s and they haven’t gone away since. Many thought that the sweater vest trend had died off after the ’90s when there was a lack of them displayed in trendy clothing stores and within the fashion community. Recently, however, they appeared on runways, like the Christian Dior Fall-Winter show in 2020 or the Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer show in 2020. Now, in 2021, the trend is in full bloom once again, with sweater vests being sold at popular stores like Urban Outfitters, PacSun, H&M, and even Target.

I’m sure there are many individuals who are able to make an outfit with a sweater vest while feeling confident and stylish, but I will never be one of those people. The question remains — keep shopping or start dropping? Maybe one day someone will convince me otherwise. But for now, I vote to start dropping.
