The Time To Be Grateful

img_7949

Just like that, it’s December and I’m almost a second semester sophomore in college. Where has the time gone … It’s true, college flies by even faster than high school. I turned 20 years old on Tuesday, and as a matter of fact, I do feel older this year. Slightly because I’m the baby in my family and 20 officially checks me out of my teens, but I also confirmed a big girl internship.

After a couple months of applying, I’m happy to say I’ll be interning with Steve Madden this coming summer in NYC! Goes to show that a little hard work starts paying off sooner rather than later. So for starters, I’m super thankful for everyone who continuously supports and pushes me towards my goals!

With one week of school left before heading home for winter break, us college students tend to stress out to the max, with all the exams and last-minute grade negotiations we have going on. Well, although this is common, it’s important to take time to think of everything you’re grateful for this time of year.

I sat down today and made a quick little list of immediate things that came to mind.  Even the smallest things make me appreciate the life I have and the people I’m surrounded by.

Here’s my list:

  1. Sincere Friendships– ladies & gents, you know who you are
  2. Pi Beta Phi – Friday morning brunch
  3. My Horoscope App – check it religiously
  4. Coffee & Avocado Toast – NOOOOM
  5. A Good Laugh – laugh ’til you cry type of laugh
  6. Art – all art expression, but specifically dance
  7. Good Health – A semester free of mono and deadly viruses
  8. College – unlimited freedom and experiencing new things every day
  9. Real Life Conversations – face-to-face communication
  10. Christmas Movies – “The Holiday” is my favorite
  11. Sunny Winter Days – keep me out of the blues
  12. Great Music – The Weeknd’s new album
  13. Handwritten Notes & Cards – I save every single one!
  14. My Beautiful Family & Boyfriend – I love you
  15. Retail Sales & Clearance – because you’re basically SAVING me money …
  16. When Your Professor Curves the Exam – understood
  17. A Night In – eh emmmm, hello introverts, I see you, I understand you
  18. The Cold Side of the Pillow – everyone knows the satisfaction
  19. Flowers – what girl doesn’t love fresh blooms
  20. Individuality – personable people and owning who you are

There’s something to be said for the rare moments throughout the day that make you smile or boost your mood. It’s the ordinary things that make life extraordinary, isn’t it?

Under the Influence of Succulents

Last weekend, I went to visit my sister in Columbus, and the moment that I arrived, she told me we needed to go succulent shopping. I know, the word makes me laugh too.

Yes, succulents, aka baby plants. Ally and I have an odd obsession with miniature plants, so I couldn’t complain. During the summer when she was making the transition into a new apartment, we visited a few florists and garden shops in search of the perfect succulent holder or pot. We found this adorable golden cube. She needed another succulent to fill, so we took a trip over to Stump, and I fell in love with all the baby plants.

My mom was always into gardening and incorporating greenery into our household.  Although I haven’t taken on gardening quite yet, I have grown to appreciate the beauty and life that plants bring to living spaces. Whether it’s studying, relaxing in the evening, grabbing coffee or going on dates … if there’s greenery involved, count me in.

Last year, my freshman roommate arrived on move-in day with three baby plants. I asked her what they were and she filled me in on their purpose.

Sunlight“, “window“, “happiness”  were the few words that I absorbed.

I’ve been noticing succulents everywhere now that I’m aware they exist. I know for a fact that my future home will be covered in these pretties. They simply make me happy. Plants remind us that beautiful, lively things exist beyond the temporary cold weather and dreary skies during the winter. Plus, fun fact fellow students: succulents help you work better.

A number of studies show that both students and workers study better in the presence of plants. Similar to being in nature, being around plants improves concentration, memory and productivity. Try it for yourselves!

For starters, succulents are super low maintenance and fairly priced.  All they need is water, a nice pot and a touch of sunlight. Heck, you can have a double-digit number of succulents and it would still be considered a normal and manageable thing, unless you have limited window space, like my room at school.

Your life may be hectic and you may have a lot going on, but I guarantee, succulents are tiny enough to fit into your life. If you’re like me and can’t get a pet, don’t feel bad.  Succulents are the cutest little things. Although you can’t necessarily pet and snuggle with them, when it comes to happiness, they won’t let you down!

My Little Black Dress

img_2178

When we think of timeless pieces, we tend to think: ClassicSimpleElegantFlattering…  correct?  A perfect example of one of these pieces is the ever so famous, little black dress (LBD). It’s true, every girl no matter their age, should have a go-to black dress in moments of hopelessness. I found mine in perfect time for my cousin’s wedding in October. It was the first dress that I tried on at Figleaf Boutique on campus.

The dress was just hanging there, in my size, flirting with me, calling my name…and when I tried it on—okay, game over I bought it…for $39.

French designer Coco Chanel published a picture of a sleek black dress in American Vogue in 1926. The dress was a simple, straight, calf-length style, but striking. Vogue considered the dress “Chanel’s Ford”, just like the famous Model T car. It was basic and universal. The best thing about it was that all women could wear it, regardless of social class.

Flash forward, the dress is still an essential component to women’s wardrobes. After all, you can go so many directions with styling one. The LBD is the epitome of a blank canvas, in which you can experiment and twist, just like I did with red heels & a gold choker.

OOTD – Because I’m comfy

dj1a7924

This is my first OOTD (Outfit of the Day), and a really comfy one if I don’t say so myself.

Yesterday was a bit gloomy, but oddly enough, I liked it. I’m really starting to appreciate these gloomy autumn days because they only feel fitting, compared to the 70 degree streaks we have been having lately. Let me remind you, it is November people…global warming needs to chill.

My friend Gabbey is a photography major and has a fashion project coming up, so she asked me to model for her! I had to say yes, of course, and I love taking advantage of free fashion shoots. It was a win, win situation for both of us.

dj1a8100

I came with lots of outfit options, but she just wanted me to feel comfortable in something simple. Once I put on my black heeled booties, I felt as if I was prepared for a chilly fall day.

Last Minute Halloween Ideas

Halloween is on a Monday this year, but that doesn’t stop us students from celebrating all weekend! Since playing dress up is still one of my favorite activities, coming up with costumes for my friends and I is so satisfying.

Last year, I decided last minute that I was going to try the half-skeleton face makeup look from a YouTube tutorial. Despite the doubt that I had in myself, it turned out to be my best costume yet! This look was super simple and I found some skeleton fishnet socks at Wal-Mart and threw on a lace-up black dress that I had in my closet!

On the second night, I dressed up as a biker chick. You can play around with this look in so many ways and that’s why it never gets old. I love leather jackets and bandanas, so this was right up my alley.  As long as you have those two things, plus some distressed denim shorts or leather leggings, you’re set.

From there, you can play around with shirts, shoes, jewelry and makeup. I planned on going to a thrift store to find a Harley Davidson shirt and cut it into a crop top, but I ran out of time. You could find a graphic tee to knot, a dark bralette like I used, a white or black crop top, or even a fun bodysuit!

This Halloween, I was on a strict budget and didn’t want to splurge on anything I knew I wasn’t going to wear again. I contemplated a few looks and then decided to do a couple’s costume with my boyfriend.

I say “couple” but I’m being Garth from Wayne’s World, and my boyfriend is being Wayne. I know, you’re probably wondering why I’m being a boy, however if you saw me in the early mornings with my glasses on, you’d understand the similarity.

It should be a good time.

For this costume, I found an Aerosmith shirt from the thrift shop. I already have a flannel, boyfriend jeans, black converse and glasses. All I really have to do is tease my hair a little bit and not wear as much makeup as I normally do.

I know how time consuming & expensive coming up with a costume can get, so I thought I would share some killer makeup Halloween looks that I came across while browsing Pinterest! It doesn’t matter how simple the outfit is, as long as the makeup is done with time and effort, you’ll be a Halloween success!

Sundaze at the Pumpkin Patch

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

This past weekend was one for the books. Cool mornings that slowly turn into 70 degree-sunny days are opportunities to engage in fall festivities and spend time doing things you love. The second that fall kicks in, pumpkin patches, apple picking, hay rides & kettle corn are the only things on my mind. For the past few weeks, I’ve been nagging absolutely everyone to go to a pumpkin patch with me. I had heard about Libby’s Pumpkin Patch from some of my girlfriends. It’s located in Albany Ohio, about 20 minutes from Athens and it was the perfect little getaway from campus.

No kettle corn, but the pumpkin ice cream sure did do the trick.

Across the street from the pumpkin patch was an enormous field of SUNFLOWERS.  I kid you not, the second that I saw them, I ran on over and picked a couple to take home.  I have a crazy love affair with flowers and green environments. I swear I could have stood there for hours.

My favorite part of fall is the colors. The bright & burnt oranges. The sunsets. The green, yellow & red hues of the leaves. The trees themselves. The scarves & sweaters. Everything bursts with beauty. Fall shows us how lovely it is to let things go.

Thigh Highs & Bare Shoulders

Thigh High Boots + Off the Shoulder Top + Choker = One Perfect Fall Outfit

img_4183

I’m already predicting that these thigh high boots will be everywhere this fall and winter. My boyfriend surprised me with Kanye West tickets about a month ago, and I made the quick decision to take advantage of my Amazon Prime account and ordered a pair of thigh highs. I swear, Prime was made for moments like these… that two-day shipping is unbeatable. I wore my black suede boots with a grunge “Pablo” oversized T-shirt. Needless to say, I felt very Kardashian-esque in the audience, so, mission accomplished!

img_4115

img_4189

This style of boot is starting to flood the streets and internet and I couldn’t be happier. I wanted to find a pair at a reasonable price (college budget, duh) and these boots are just as cute as the $800 Stuart Weitzman pair!  The slim, sock-like fit is so flattering and the length compliments anything from leggings and black jeans, to mini skirts and oversized sweaters. Depending on how you style them, over-the-knee boots can make a bold statement while being sexy, chic, and sophisticated. It’s truly the little details that make the biggest impact.

img_4081

I have a rehearsal dinner coming up next weekend, which is clearly a totally different occasion to wear my new boots to. My go-to color is black for more formal occasions, which explains the boots, skinny jeans and choker. But, I wanted to add a fall hue. Yellow is dominating in the color game this year. I know, what an unexpected color, but it’s really catching my eye this season and I’m loving it. I found this off the shoulder, ruffled top on shopakira.com. I’m obsessed. It’s super comfortable and gathers at the waist, showing some shape and contrast.

img_4236

The over-the-knee boots dress up my outfit, but I also really enjoy styling this top with a distressed jean jacket and black booties for a daytime look.  See, like I said, it’s all in the details. Little changes like this go a long way in transforming an outfit.

Nail The Nineties

The lifecycle of fashion is proof that “what goes around comes around.”  There’s nothing like looking through old photos of your parents, only to notice the clothing they were wearing are wardrobe staples repeating themselves today.  When you hear the words, grunge & minimalistic, what decade comes to mind?  1990’s.  Being one of my favorite decades, those two words defined the trends, along with laid-back streetwear and “seductive school student” styles.

imgres  90s-fashion-clueless   3024a87e00000578-3398243-their_inspiration_britney_spears_in_a_compton_cheerleading_top_a-m-62_1452721457423   977f0352a7803fc4aae5de8e0df49476

Fashion during this time period introduced a sense of playfulness and youth, but also dabbled in rebellion, which is why I love it so much.  Trends and styles that were once seen as modern and daring eventually became old and repetitive, only to be reborn decades later.  What do you know, fashion that was considered cool & trendy in the ’90s is back and cooler than ever.  So, embrace the chokers, high-waisted jeans and crop tops! Incorporate looks inspired by Britney Spears, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, the Spice Girls or Kate Moss.  This past week, I had a “’90s Celebrities” themed social for my sorority & putting together an outfit was a blast and super simple.  One of my favorite ’90s inspired looks is below:

img_3033-1  img_2976-1

img_2984-1  img_3029-1

I found this corduroy – front zip-up dress from Forever 21.  It’s the perfect dress to layer on top of a crop top, graphic tee or mesh shirt.  In the ’90s, Doc Martens were paired with delicate slip dresses, creating a contrast of femininity and masculinity due to the heaviness of the boot. I’m a huge fan of this style coming back around, however I thought this corduroy dress was something a little different!

The key to rocking ’90s fashion in 2016 is to rework and update the trends with present day styles.  Kendall Jenner is amazing at doing this, by pairing crop tops and chokers with basic skinny jeans and heeled booties.  Pair your mini skirt with an oversized denim jacket and thigh high boots!  Throw on that new slip dress with a graphic tee & Converse.  Play around a bit. You’ll find what ’90s staples work for you!
