Rain, Rain Go Away

As we start to fully embrace the spring season, the realization that we must also accept the rain that comes with it begins to settle in. We struggle to find a day where the rain isn’t a constant bother and the sun can shine through. As college students, the need to walk everywhere proves to be a huge disadvantage in combatting the rain.

When you leave your door, the constant reminder of needing an umbrella attached to your hip never slips your mind, and if it does, like in my case, you’re bound to be sitting under any coverage you can find, awaiting the rain’s departure. Sometimes you find yourself confined to one childsized duck umbrella, which has happened more than once might I add.

Finding the right clothes to accommodate the warmer weather as well as the rain becomes the ultimate task, too. If you wear sandals, you’re bound to be thinking about wet feet throughout the duration of your lecture. On the flip side, wearing warmer clothing when it’s 80 degrees and raining will lead you to hate your choice of clothing even more than having wet feet.

However, through all of the rainy, gloomy days we must undergo, it is the days or even weeks where the rain moves out of sight and out of mind that we yearn for it. The days where the sun shines and the breeze picks up around a cool 70 degrees are the ones worth appreciating. So take those days and make the best of them, whether you’re heading out for a hike, or simply walking around town, you won’t regret your choice. It only makes it that much easier to accept the gloomy days where the rain takes over your mind.

P.S. If there happens to be a break in the rain, take the opportunity to catch a rainbow sighting. I mean what better way to brighten up a gloomy day.

The Perfect Sunglasses

With summer just around thr corner, finding the perfect pair of sunglasses is a tricky thing to master. You have to find the style, size and fit to match your face perfectly. Fashion Inspired by Friends

Looking to television and movies for tips on how to get that perfect closet of clothes has never been a bad idea. Of course, the differing factor is what shows we take cues from to define what the perfect closet is to us.

For me, Friends is a show full of clothing worth taking the time to find at a thrift store or in the back of a friend’s closet. From Rachel’s crop top and skirt combination, to Phoebe’s long and leisurely dresses that she never seemed to shed throughout the series — Friends was the epitome of style on TV.

Take a look at some of the most iconic outfits from Friends for a little style inspiration.

RACHEL

Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel, can be socially-accepted as one of the best dressed women on this show, from her power suits worn at work, to the crop-top trend that we see often. As a person who owns way too many graphic tees for her own good, Rachel’s collection proves to be a showstopper. Not to mention, her overalls, both short and long styles, made countless debuts throughout the series. Plus, getting her hair to look that flawless is always something worth appreciating.

MONICA

From the classic, high-waisted “mom jeans” to the countless dresses that Courteney Cox’s character, Monica, wears throughout the show, her fashion choices are sure to be paid attention to. Like Rachel, her crop-tops are occasionally paired with wide-legged pants, achieving the ultimate comfort level, and even she makes the infamous “Canadian Tuxedo” look good.

PHOEBE

Lightweight, loose fitting and patterned are all words that have the capacity to describe the enigma that is Lisa Kudrow’s character, Phoebe’s personal style. She never fails to let us down with her many maxi dresses or her endless coats. Phoebe takes a lot of fashion risks that always pay off and make her look incredible. I mean how many people look that great in fringe?

Rounding Third and Heading Home

Baseball season is here. This means more than just the obvious fact that baseball games will now be broadcasted during the majority of the day and rivalries will begin to fill up the sports fans minds. The bonuses with the incoming season ultimately boils down to warmer weather, more grill-outs, and more ball park festivities. Putting aside the hefty prices that ball parks tack onto everything, nothing screams summertime like a day at a game enjoying some sunny weather with a couple of pals.

Personally. I love watching the games and supporting my favorite teams, but even if you aren’t a big sports fan, take advantage of cards dealt and enjoy some of the leisure that comes with the vibes of baseball and summer all at once.

Take a day and celebrate the arrival of the baseball season by hanging outside, enjoying a game and of course, indulging in as many grilled items as possible because before you know it we’ll all be trudging through the snow again.

Valentine’s Day

Since the dawn of time, or whenever Hallmark decided to capitalize on the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day has traditionally been a day to celebrate with your admirer about the love you share. However, as the holiday passes each year, the dreaded taboo of being single no longer frightens the majority, including myself.

Although there are arguments for both having a relationship and being single on Valentine’s Day, there’s something to be said for a group of single people going out and having a good time — ditching the candlelit and expensive dinner in exchange for pizza and drinks. Many people have found comfort in having a boys’ night or getting a group of friends together to catch a movie. Maybe you prefer to just hang out in the comfort of your home and take a bunch of naps. Whatever your alternative plans may be, it still holds true that many people are avoiding the stigma of having to “have a date” on Valentine’s Day and are just enjoying some free time instead.

As a rule of thumb, looking toward the media is never a bad idea to see just how these taboos are beginning to become more acceptable. Parks and Recreation’s lead woman, Leslie Knope, celebrates the day with “Galentine’s Day.” A phrase she coins when a group of girls annually get together and share a meal whether they are in a relationship or not. New Girl’s main character, Jessica Day, celebrates by going out and looking for a fling for all intensive purposes with the help of her wingman, Schmidt. So, the media certainly sheds an interesting light on the situation that is Valentine’s Day.

However, I want to add to those who are in relationships. You should do the candlelit-super-expensive meal, with roses, of course, because that’s important to experience! But to those without a date this year, find an alternative and most importantly, treat yourself, because you’re just as important.

4th and Goal

After enjoying a Sunday filled with all of the joys that a single Super Bowl game can bring, there are many things to be thankful for. No matter what part of the festivities keep you coming back each year for more of the magic, it’s bound to bring anyone happiness. Whether it is the competition for the best commercial or anticipating the halftime show. Even if you simply enjoy getting together with your closest friends and family to spend time together, that’s perfectly acceptable as well! Honestly, how could you pass any of it up?

Personally this Super Bowl began with settling in with various amounts of snacks watching the hours of the pregame shows. Followed by the growing excitement for what commercial would be my favorite and waiting for Lady Gaga to meet all of my expectations during her performance at the halftime show. Which we can all agree that with the release of her newest album, fans won’t be disappointed this year.

gallery-1474019090-lady-gaga-joanne-album-2016Most importantly, the reason many of us tune into the Super Bowl every year is to watch the intensity, passion, and commitment to one of the greatest games: football. No matter if you are rooting for the Patriots or the Falcons this year, it is bound to be a game worth watching. However, I can’t help but add a bit of bias to say that the anticipation of Tom Brady and the Patriots game play is too much to handle for a lot of fans. Arguably Tom Brady is one of the greatest players to play the game, this is my opinion of course. But, I mean seriously did you see his reaction during that press conference after someone asked who his hero was? Pure bliss.

So with the added bonus of one of my favorite football teams playing this year, in addition to the energy that every Super Bowl brings in, it will surely  be a game worth remembering.

Home is Where Your Heart Is

3

It’s a liberating feeling to pack your bags and leave the place you call home in order to dive into the adventures that can only be explained in one word: college.

It’s the first time that you are truly experiencing a sense of independence. It comes with a lot of responsibility, but once the dust settles and you find the right people to lean on, that’s when the real excitement begins.

You’ll find yourself restricted by the do’s and don’ts, and prioritizing your time will become a balancing act. But on the flip side, you’re experience things you never imagined you would. Like watching your friend rollerblade down the steepest hill on campus, or gluing your gnome back together after it accidentally fell four stories out of your dorm window.

You find yourself at the crossroads of a pizza night with your friends or studying for a big exam more often than you’d like, but like I said it’s a lot of responsibility.

4

It’s one of the biggest steps we take in life and sometimes it’s hard for us to remain calm through it all, myself included. We all need a little bit of help adjusting, so it’s important not forget who was there before the adventure began.

Find solace in calling your family, take a bus ride home for the weekend or share a laugh with your best friend via FaceTime.

Whatever you do, always remember the wise words of Hannah Montana.

“Life’s a climb, but the view is great.”

5 Reasons You Should Be Reading a Book Instead of “Netflixing?”

Did you just finish binge-watching a show on Netflix? Are you struggling to find what to watch next? Well, you should grab a book instead!

1. LET’S GET CREATIVE

Truthfully, it’s easier to turn on your TV and be distracted for hours on end with the click of a few buttons, but what’s the fun in that? Opening a book and stepping into a world in which you can create your own version of the author’s story is so much more empowering!

2.   THE AROMA OF A NEW BOOK

I know it sounds a bit odd, and trust me you’re right. But, come on! Have you ever gone to the bookstore and bought a new book?! The smell is certainly one to enjoy, if you ask me.

3. YOU’RE LEARNING EVEN IF IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE IT

When you start reading on a regular basis, you tend to carry a lot more baggage, in a good way, of course! You pick up a new vocabulary, a better understanding of those pesky literary terms, and if the book happens to come up in a conversation, you’ll sound like the most well-read person in the bunch!

4. THE BOOK IS BETTER-THAN-THE-MOVIE THEORY

I can’t even count how many times I’ve read a book and enjoyed it, only to have the movie deprive me of the bare necessities that made me fall in love with the book in the first place. As a rule of thumb, do yourself a favor and always read the book first.

5. THERE’S NO LIGHT AT THE END OF THIS TUNNEL

Whether you’re looking to engage in a mystery filled-to-the-brim with twists and turns, or a more light-hearted romantic comedy, there are endless authors with endless stories! You’re just one library card away from never-ending enjoyment.
